Acid-resistant S. boulardii is a probiotic yeast strain specific for the prevention and treatment of Clostridium difficile (C. diff.) infection. C. diff. is a bacterial gastrointestinal infection that occurs most frequently among hospitalized patients treated with broad-spectrum antibiotics. C. diff. infection results in severe, watery diarrhea which can lead to nutrient malabsorption and significant debility, especially in the elderly or those with other preexisting health conditions. C. diff. is becoming an increasing problem in the community as well, and reinfection is a problem. In one study, Saccharomyces boulardii was shown to reduce C. diff. recurrence among patients treated with 10 days of vancomycin plus a 30-day course of S. boulardii. In another study of patients with recurrent C. diff., Saccharomyces supplementation in addition to standard antibiotic therapy was shown to reduce the risk of C. diff. recurrence by over 50% compared to standard antibiotic therapy plus placebo.
In addition to C. diff., Saccharomyces boulardii has been shown to have therapeutic effects in prevention of enteral nutrition–related diarrhea and reduction of Helicobacter pylori treatment–related symptoms, and may hold promise in a host of other conditions including irritable bowel syndrome, acute adult diarrhea, Crohn’s disease, giardiasis, and human immunodeficiency virus–related diarrhea.
Helps to reduce the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea.
