Coenzyme Q₁₀ is an antioxidant for the maintenance of good health, and can also help in the maintenance and/or support of cardiovascular health. Coenzyme Q₁₀ acts as a free-radical scavenger, and is metabolized to ubiquinol. Coenzyme Q₁₀ should be considered in all heart disorders including angina, deterioration of the immune system related to age, and as an excellent antioxidant.
Coenzyme Q₁₀, also known as ubiquinone, is an extremely versatile molecule which functions in a number of essential cellular processes. It is a crucial component of the oxidative phosphorylation process in mitochondria, which converts the energy from carbohydrates and fatty acids to adenosine triphosphate (ATP), and is also involved in the membrane electron transport chain.
Coenzyme Q₁₀ is an electron carrier supporting ATP synthesis in the lipid phase of the mitochondria membrane. Because of its potential antioxidant property and involvement in mitochondrial function, it has been investigated in cardiovascular disease, exercise performance, cancer, HIV/AIDS, and neurodegenerative disease. It has been demonstrated that coenzyme Q₁₀ strengthens the heart, enhances exercise performance, reduces breast cancer risk, supports immune function, is helpful in neurological disorders and Parkinson’s disease, and slows the aging process. It was also proposed from one study that coenzyme Q₁₀’s ability to enhance antibody production is related to its antioxidant effects. This could minimize oxidative stress and cell membrane turnover, thus improving antigen recognition and antibody production.
